Describe the problem before asking for a price
Jewellery repair costs depend on the piece and proposed work. A broken chain, a loose stone and a resizing request are different jobs, even when the jewellery looks similar. Tell the jeweller what happened, identify the material if known and supply photographs. Ask whether an in-person assessment is needed before a reliable quote can be given.
This guide does not provide invented local price ranges. A price is useful only when it relates to your item, the agreed work and the professional performing it.
Define the repair scope in writing
Ask which parts will be repaired or replaced and whether the finish or appearance may change. If resizing, discuss engraving, settings and any coating that may need attention. For a stone replacement, agree the specification and how the replacement will be documented.
Request a written quote stating the work, total charge and any additional assessment or postage costs. Ask what happens if the jeweller finds another issue after starting. Agree that further work requires your approval rather than leaving the scope open-ended.
Check handling, timing and insurance
Find out whether work is carried out on site or sent elsewhere. Ask how the piece is recorded, stored and insured while in the business's care. For a posted repair, confirm packaging instructions and the appropriate transit arrangements with the service provider.
Timing matters if the piece is needed for an event. Ask for an expected completion date and how delays will be communicated. Do not assume every small-looking fault is a same-day repair.
Keep a clear handover and collection record
Photograph the piece before handing it over. Bring purchase information, material specifications or certificates where available, and keep an intake receipt describing the item. Retain the written quote and any correspondence about changed scope.
At collection, check the agreed repair and ask about aftercare and the guarantee applying to the work. If a clasp was replaced or a ring altered, discuss how to use and look after it. Our repair pages open external searches; they are discovery aids, not vetted recommendations. Contact the individual professional and assess their experience with your construction before authorising work.
