Use a ring from the intended finger
A UK ring size guide provides a reference, but a useful measurement begins with the right sample. Choose a round ring that fits the finger you intend to wear it on. A ring from another finger or hand may be an unsuitable starting point. Check that the sample is not visibly bent or distorted.
Measure the inside opening across its centre in millimetres. Do not include the metal band or substitute the outside diameter. A precise measurement is more useful than guessing from a photograph.
Keep diameter and circumference separate
Diameter is the straight distance across the inside opening; circumference is the distance around it. They are not interchangeable numbers. If using the JEWELLERIX finder, choose the matching input tab before entering a value. The tool converts a circumference measurement to a diameter reference and selects the nearest row in its chart.
A nearest result is an approximate match, not a fit guarantee. Record the original measurement so you can compare it with the seller's own sizing instructions.
Check the chart and the design
UK letter sizes, US numbers and European references should be read against a stated chart. Retailer charts can differ in their conversions and rounding. Our tool uses a published Monica Vinader reference and links to the source. Confirm the final size with the retailer of the actual ring.
Band width, inner shape and a stack of several rings can change how a size feels. A narrow sample may not predict the fit of a broad band. If possible, try a sizer or sample close to the design you plan to buy.
Take care with printed charts and surprise gifts
A printed ring chart must be printed at the scale specified by its maker and checked against its calibration mark. A phone screen or resized print can distort the comparison. For an important purchase, a professional fitting is a useful final step.
For a surprise gift, find out the intended finger and read exchange and resizing terms before ordering. Personalisation can affect your options. Do not assume every ring can later be resized. The home measurement helps you prepare questions; the particular ring and wearer determine the final decision.
